Explore the partially restored ruins of Sewu Temple, an 8th-century Mahayana Buddhist temple complex that shares many similarities with the adjacent Hindu temple. Admire the ornate central building, which displays a more rounded, organic aesthetic than its Hindu sibling. The ancient temple spent centuries buried by volcanic debris, during which time its history became intertwined with local myths and folklore. The name translates to "A Thousand Temples"--in reality they number 249--which derives from the popular folktale "The Legend of Loro Jonggrang." Historians believe the complex was originally called "Manjusri grha" (The House of Manjusri).
