Built to celebrate the nation's independence, National Monument (MONAS) towers over central Jakarta and serves as the city's principal landmark. Considered one of the architectural extravagances of Sukarno, Indonesia's first president, this 130 m (425 ft) monument features a sculpted flame on the top, decorated with over 30 kg (70 lb) of gold foil. Built of Italian marble, the soaring tower houses a history museum at its base, where you can see over 50 dioramas narrating the country's struggle for independence. Head to the observation deck for sweeping views of the city from a height of almost 120 m (400 ft). Put National Monument (MONAS) at the forefront of your travel plans using our Jakarta journey planning app.

  • A lot of good national information presented inside MONAS so do take your time to read them in chronological order. And there is a scheduled short moment where a protected door is opened to display...

  • Long queues for the single lift to the top. Waited about an hour. Fantastic views over Jakarta and the park is very pleasant to walk around.
  • Impressive monument where you can take a lift to the top. Lovely little park around it if you want to get some rest. Expect long queues unless it is weekday morning. Today there was only one lift working but it was enough. You can also hop on the little road train which will take you straight to the monument entrance for free.
