Hang out with sacred monkeys at Sankat Mochan Temple, a small two story yellow brick structure and a major pilgrimage spot in Varanasi known as The Monkey Temple. Situated by the River Assi, this is one of the three most important temples in the city, connected with Goswami Tulsidas, a famous 16th century poet who had a vision of Lord Hanuman who inspired him to write a long poet about Lord Rama. Reconstructed early in the 20th century by the independence fighter Madan Mohan Malaviya, the temple has a resident population of monkeys. A very famous temple thronged by visitors coming from outside to Varanasi. Localities too pay obeisance here regularly. It's crowded all the times and one should have ample time to visit this place This temple is located in a narrow lane from the main road and vehicles cannot come inside the lane. The temple is housed in a big campus and one has to walk a lot inside. Shoes, mobiles etc are not allowed inside. Out side the temple campus, shops selling flowers and sweetmeats are sold.
