See the famous four-lions pillar of Ashoka featured on Indian flag at Archaeological Museum, the oldest site museum in the country. Established in 1910, the museum houses the findings and excavations at the Sarnath archeological site. Five galleries and two verandahs feature nearly 7,000 sculptures and artifacts with a particularly good collection of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas images. In addition to the 2,260 years old sandstone pillar, you can admire a seated 5th century seated Buddha, cross-legged with a halo, or a life-size image of a standing Bodhisattva with a lotus. Explore the open-air section of pillar bases and sculptures set in well-maintained gardens. Plan my trip to Varanasi with suggested itineraries provided by Inspirock.

*Sarnath is a good place to visit. Have seen and read many old artifacts in history books, which will be seen here. *The ticket price is Rs 30 which includes museum and park fare. You can book the tickets via Paytm (Scan QR code at the entrance gate) *It closes early by 5.30 so plan a day for the first half. *It is just 10-12 Km away from Varanasi, but due to congested roads and choked traffic journey time is more than 45 mins *Mobile phones are not allowed inside the Museum premises, but you can carry a digital camera.
