In the center of Athens, Plateia Syntagmatos has been an important site of Greek politics and history. The square's name references a military uprising in 1843, which resulted in Greece's first King, Otto, being forced to sign a constitution. A trip to the capital will inevitably have you passing through the square, but it's worth taking the time to appreciate the history that has unfolded here. See the Greek Parliament, housed in the Old Royal Palace, and catch the changing of the guard ceremony, which takes place just in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Stroll the massive National Gardens just behind the Parliament. Grab a bite to eat at one of the cafes lining the square and settle in for some people-watching. Looks lovely with the lights, and the Christmas tree is very impressive. Very busy 90% of the time, so watch your belongings, but it’s worth a wander. Lots to see for kids - last night Santa was there, with Mini and Mickey mouse, the paw patrol guys, balloon makers, elves and clowns. Since it’s the main square in Athens centre it’s easily accessible from public transport, and food/drinks wise there’s lots around too.

The Syntagma is the main central square in Athens. It's adorned with a nice (but not well maintained) park in the middle and the imposing Neo-classic Parliament edifice dominating. The best thing you can do here is watching the Parliament guard change, take some pics and that's it
