When King Wilhelm I's young Russian wife, Katharina, died unexpectedly in 1819, he erected Grabkapelle auf dem Wuerttemberg high above Stuttgart as a testament to their eternal love. This location on the site of the former residence of the dukes of Württember had been one of Katharina's favorite spots, offering spectacular views over the city and the Neckar Valley. The inscription above the chapel's entrance reads "Love Never Dies," and the spot is considered by locals to be one of the city's most romantic. The mausoleum is among the most impressive examples of Neoclassical in the region, inspired by the Pantheon in Rome and striking in its severe style. Inside you'll find an iconostasis (wall of icons)--the chapel still serves a Russian Orthodox place of worship. Underground are the Carrara marble sarcophagi of Katharina, King Wilhelm I himself, and his eldest daughter, Marie Friederike Charlotte von Württemberg.
