Create an itinerary including David Gareja Monastery
The Orthodox David Gareja Monastery complex conceals hundreds of cells, churches, and monks' quarters, hollowed out in a rocky mountain verge. In this semi-desert setting you can see shepherds herding their flock and birds of prey hunting, while the monks pick wild herbs emerging from rocky pathways. Visit the monastery and its quarters, and climb a hill from which you can see both Georgia and Azerbaijan. Look for the tomb of St. David Garejeli, the Assyrian monk who founded the complex in the 6th century. The climate at this site can be harsh, so bring warm clothes and have enough food and water for lengthy walks. To find out how to plan a trip to Udabno, use our trip itinerary maker.

  • Great place relatively close to Tbilisi. An important historical testimony of the past and present of this marvellous country. It is possible to go in and around and up the hill. I would recommend to go by with an English speaking driver who can tell and describe the importance of the place (price for European tourists should not be so high and negociable) There is also a fantastic view over the Rainbow Hills and a shop where to buy beautiful souvenirs made by the monks. It is absolutely worth a visit.
  • This a must to visit in Georgia on the guides, papers and internet. Unfortunately it was a deception for me: most area was unallowed to visit because monks privacy. Too long trip for so little to see. I visited in January. May be in spring or summer would be possible to visiting more places in the monastery.
