La Grotte des Demoiselles
La Grotte des Demoiselles has served as, among other things, a hiding place and refuge for people from various walks of life. Exploring the cave was quite perilous until the 20th century, when it was outfitted with concrete stairs, walkways, sturdy railings, and extensive lighting. The name, which also has been "fairies' grotto," comes from a legend about a young shepherd who followed his lamb into the cave until he fell into a vast chamber known as the cathedral. Just before losing consciousness, he reportedly saw a vision of young ladies dancing and singing around him. When he awoke, he was outside the cave with his lamb. Very cool place. The tour is only in French though. There is an audio guide, but it is not synced with what the guide is telling, so that does degrade the experience somewhat.
