Perhaps one of the most famous and opulent opera houses in the world, Palais Garnier was the setting for the 1910 novel "The Phantom of the Opera,” by Gaston Leroux. When you approach the façade, look up and you'll see the 7.5-m (25-ft) Beaux Arts statue known as L’Harmonie. Today, the opera house primarily produces ballet productions, which you can attend with advance tickets. Admission to an on-site museum, the Bibliothèque-Musée de l'Opéra de Paris (Paris Opera Library-Museum), is included in unaccompanied tours of the opera house building. Be sure to admire the enormous bronze and crystal chandelier in the auditorium. You can dine in the L'Opéra Restaurant. Even after Le Louvre, Chenonceau, on and on, the opera house is a stunner. If only to have heard Pavarotti sing Puccini here.

Palais Garnier is one of the finest opera building in the world both architectural and music wise. It was built according to the plans of Charles Garnier and the building in itself is a work of art...

This is an amazing building. It's a bit unassuming from the outside, although it does look quite nice. Inside, however, it's an example of opulence and craftsmanship. The details in some of the rooms are awe inspiring. It's definitely worth a visit even if you're not catching a show. The performance auditorium is also very plush, and seeing a performance would no doubt be an experience, but I would recommend a visit even just for the building itself.

No doubt this building is a palace dedicated to Opera. For 12 euros the self guided tour is just OK. You will be able to visit the extensive three story lobby and opulent gathering spaces around the Opera House. We were unable however to enter the actual theater or even really see it except they're a very small plastic window. I enjoyed the displays of a few of the costumes.
