The Roman amphitheater Arenes de Nimes, constructed around 70 CE as a theater, later hosted bullfights and other public events. Thirty-four rows of seats, accommodating up to 16,300 visitors, ring this vaulted building's elliptical central space. The amphitheater was converted into a fortified town and refuge for denizens during the invasions and wars of the second millennium. Today, the amphitheater has been restored to its original purpose--now with a removable cover and heating system--and hosts musical acts from around the world. Amazing-1951 years old! This arena built by hands (even lives!) & stones still stand tall while we humans come & go like a handful of dust. If there's one visit that you can't miss, this is THE one.

A must see if you are visiting Nimes. We went on a Saturday at 10am and it was very quiet. We bought a family pass for 20€ (2 adults and 2 children). You can hire an audio guide for free, you just need to give them an ID Card to hold and will be given back to you when you return their audio guide. Very interesting and beautiful place to visit. Approx 2000 years old and a stunning place to sit and take in the enormity of the amphitheater. Toilets located on site and a gift shop.
