Trip Planner: Europe / France / Centre-Val de Loire / Indre-et-Loire / Chenonceaux / Chateau de Chenonceau
Protected and loved by prominent women in Renaissance history, including Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Médici, Chateau de Chenonceau, is the second most visited château in France, other than the Royal Palace of Versailles. French Renaissance architect Philibert de l'Orme designed the castle and built it on the site of an old mill on the River Cher in the 11th century. The château later saw renovations during the 16th century due to its destruction in the 15th century.
All of its gardens and grounds are open for you to explore, including the castle's architectural mixture of late Gothic and early Renaissance. Old masters’ paintings, as well as an extremely rare selection of Flanders Tapestries from the 16th century, comprise the art collection. Visit Catherine de Médicis’ bedroom to view the recently restored Corrège’s painting on wood, "L’Education de l’Amour." One if not THE most beautiful castle along the Loire! It is simple, without a lot of “fuzz” yet absolutely stunning. The fresh flowers and bouquets in almost all of the rooms provides a feeling of homeliness, as if someone would still be living there. The parks and gardens are beautiful and well maintained. The woods around it invite to beautiful walks. The labyrinth is fun for kids and adults alike. There’s even a place with donkeys, goats and chicken. A tour inside the castle takes about 1-1 1/2 hour. There are lots of small stairways. It is not suitable for prams or wheelchairs. As it is a fairly small castle and people cross paths especially on the stairs, the number of visitors at a time is restricted. You can book your visits on advance online. Parking is free.
Without the slightest exaggeration, this place is one of the most beautiful places I have visited. The castle is beautiful and with such a great historical load, it is incredible to be able to be in the same places where the great ladies of France once lived. The gardens are wonderful, you just don't know what to see first.
