Sit on the stone tiers of Pula Arena, and imagine how gladiators fought wild animals and each other in the central area. The arena was built in the 1st century CE during the reign of Emperor Vespasian, at the same time as the Roman Colosseum. Walk the underground passages, once used by the gladiators, and see the exhibition of age-old viticulture and olive growing in Istria. Check out the reconstructions of ancient mills and presses, and amphorae used for storing olive oil and wine. The venue was also a site of knights' tournaments and fairs in the Middle Ages. Today it hosts summer performances--a film festival, an equestrian festival, operas, and concerts. Make Pula Arena a part of your Pula vacation plans using our Pula trip planner.

Beautiful and magnificent Roman arena. It used to be the sixth largest arena in the Roman empire and could hold up to 20,000 people. As such I am amazed that it is still standing and that you can get that close to it. Definitely recommend it for a cozy night stroll!

The Pula arena is a must see when you are visiting. Come on a nice warm day and enjoy the sun and ancient history. The admission price is very reasonable, students get discounts. The history is spread out in front of you and it is incredible. The olive oil works are in the subterranean level and it's pretty impressive.
