Swim, marvel at exotic plants, and walk with peacocks at Lokrum Island. Visit the site where, according to legend, King Richard the Lionheart was cast safely ashore after a shipwreck during his return from the crusades. The area was also once a favorite summer retreat of Austrian archduke Maximilian. To get to the island, ride a ferry from the city. Enjoy a dip in the small salt lake, which is 10 m (33ft) deep and known as the Dead Sea. Visit the botanical garden to admire Mediterranean plants, including laurels, oaks, pines, cypresses, olives, agaves, cacti, magnolia, and palms. If you'd like to take a journey back in time, explore the deserted 11th-century Benedictine monastery. Loved it. Well worth the trip. It cost 200kn to take the boat there from Dubrovnik old port, and then another 200kn on the island to enter the nature reserve. There are restaurants, peacocks, beautiful scenery and places to swim from as well as a nudist beach there. And don't forget the Iron Throne.

Went for a day out to Lokrum Island where we went hiking and nature swimming which was lovely. The prices had increased from when I had researched this activity online, it cost HRK 400 for two people which was quite steep but did include boat travel to the island and entry to the national park. Ultimately we didn’t mind the cost as the money is used to maintain Dalmatia’s national parks. The park was very beautiful with lots of very friendly peacocks. We loved swimming both in the sea and the salt lake and hiked over the entire island. The central hub of the island was very busy as I think it is where most tourists stay when they arrive, otherwise a great day out.
