Do not miss the exciting cultural experience of Punanga Nui, a sprawling market offering produce, crafts, and much more. Traditional music sets the scene for a vibrant atmosphere, and you can spot dancers here and there while shopping. Freshly caught fish, honey, fruit, vegetables, and tropical flowers are all locally produced. If you do not plan to make your own dinner, head to the cooked-food tents instead. Sellers offer everything from mouthwatering fruit smoothies to kebabs. If you want to pick up some souvenirs, choose from pearls and shells, whale-bone necklaces, quilts, and sarongs. Put Punanga Nui on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Avarua visit planning website.

  • We had heard so much about this market, but were disappointed with what we found. Maybe it was because it was Easter, we didnt realize that most of Rarotonga closes down over Easter. We found items...

  • Such an amazing experience to visit the market and buy some fresh goods. The meat pies and fresh scones were delicious. The perfect spot to score some treasures to gift friends and family. Also some fabulous island dancing and drumming to top off your morning. Definitely a must see. Only open on Saturdays.
  • Visited in January 2022 just after the quarantine travel restarted. The market is a great place to be on a Saturday morning, there is a variety of stalls, food, smoothies, all readily accessible off of the main road. Value for money is good, meals ranging NZD10-15, with serving sizes quite generous. There are toilet facilities, water refill stations, and helpful people around.
