Discovered in the jungle, the gigantic ruins of Beng Mealea offer fabulous scenery reminiscent of an Indiana Jones movie. Built in the early 12th century, possibly as a prototype to Angkor Wat, this enormous temple complex is surrounded by a huge moat measuring 1.2 by 0.9 km (0.75 by 0.56 mi). Feel the power of nature as you admire intricate stone carvings and finely chiseled blocks of stone covered by lush vegetation. Roots and crowns of ancient trees protruding from even older stone structures provide shade. Some tours include lunch served under a tent next to the ruins, but regardless of how you visit the complex, you should stick to the boardwalks and beware of snakes. Spectacular temple outside of Siem Reap and away from the crowds. It’s still unrestored, full of nature around, and only has a wooden walkway throughout. Definitely worth a visit!
