An impressive landmark of Phnom Penh, Independence Monument commemorates Cambodia’s patriots and war victims in the central part of the city. Featured on the 100 riel banknote, this impressive 20 m (66 ft) tall lotus-shaped structure takes after Angkor Wat, celebrating the country’s independence from foreign rule. Erected in 1962, with carved multi-headed "Naga" snakes bursting out of the corners of lotus petals, this red-brown stone monument stands as the centerpiece of a roundabout surrounded by a large park area. The ignition of a flame under the arch and frequent flower-laying ceremonies take place at the site. Get a close-up view of the guards by foot, or admire this well-lit, majestic structure at night from afar. • Proud to be here many times but never have time to review. After a nice walk, I found that it is a nice place to visit. It is clean and green with fresh air especially in the evening and morning. Let's come
  • We have only been here once in the evening. We only get to see it from across the street as it was closed off. There is a water fountain around the Independence Monument which changes colors. It was beautiful. I am not sure if you can actually get to walk around the Monument area as it is the center of a major traffic roundabout. The area around the Independence Monument is will lit, full of people walking around and just hanging out with friends and family.
