Bokor Hill Station, Kampot

Colonial history stands out at Bokor Hill Station, a collection of buildings originally established as a luxurious mountainous retreat from the heat for Frenchmen. During its construction in the 1920s, 900 people died due to the weather and work conditions at this remote location. The Catholic church here dates back to its opening in 1925, while other structures, like the casino built in the 1960s, were added on later. This attraction has gone through periods of destruction and abandonment over time, as well as rejuvenation. Until the 1990s, it was the last stronghold of Cambodia's Communist party, Khmer Rouge, but has since been simply a tourist attraction.
