Experience the opulence of Eglise Notre Dame Du Sablon, which has long been a place of worship for the elite of Brussels and serves as a remarkable example of Brabantine Gothic architecture. The land was first consecrated when the Noble Serment of Crossbowmen, a local guild, decided to turn their exercise space into a modest chapel. However, this humble church was replaced in the 15th century, with an interior that was completed in the 17th century. The cathedral is covered in carved reliefs and ornate masonry, while the interior reflects the efforts of the wealthy families to bring the richness of daily life to the church service with gilded Baroque chapels. The fanciful wood carvings on the altar and pulpit are the work of a 19th-century artist, Auguste Schoy. After a church tour, sample some of the sweets from the surrounding chocolate shops. A great place to worship and/or attend a Mass. Or just to meditate. Of course, the inside architecture and decoration are fantastic. But there is more, far more, to do with a visit. Final tip: Mass on Saturday an Sunday are accompanied by remarkable traditional songs and organ music.

A few devotees wandered around or prayed while a solo pianist was filling the air with divine tunes. The low winter midday winter solstice sun shone through the multicoloured stained glass windows. Magic happens when seemingly unconnected elements converge as if by chance and foment inspiration.
