Basilica of the Holy Blood is best known for containing the relic of the Holy Blood, a cloth alleged to have Christ's blood on it. The relic dates to 1150, when Derrick of Alsace, the Count of Flanders, received the relic as a reward for his heroism during the second crusade. Built in the 12th century, this is the only Romanesque-style church in Bruges. The upper chapel has been renovated several times in a Gothic Revival style. Enter the lower chapel to view the ornate naves, sculptures, and relics dedicated to several saints. Climb the Renaissance-style staircase to the upper chapel, where you'll find the relic of the Holy Blood. • A really beautiful church and it was an interesting experience to actually come up close to the Holy Blood in a vial. It’s a moving event. The paintings on the walls, plus the beautiful decorations...

  • Such a serene and peaceful place of worship with rich history and basilica of the holy blood. It gives you emotional uplift to see such a precious relic on view only on Fridays. A place must to pay respect and visit while in Bruges. 🙏🏼
  • Magnificent church housing a relic of a cloth that legend says was used to wash Jesus after he was crucified. It is brought out only at certain times of the day so check that first if you want to see it. The church itself is really beautiful with magnificent stained glass, paintings, artefacts, and architecture
