Create an itinerary including Kaisergruft
Stand close enough to touch the remains of Austrian royalty at Kaisergruft--the final resting place of Habsburgs. The burial chamber beneath the Capuchin church and monastery has been the place of entombment for this royal family since 1633. It houses the bones of 145 Habsburgs, including 12 emperors and 18 empresses. Walk down the well-lit and airy chambers with bare walls. See how 107 metal sarcophagi range in style from puritan plain to exuberant Rococo. Enter the Maria-Theresia-Gruft--a domed chamber dominated by a huge, elaborate sarcophagus for the empress and her husband. Note how the plain coffin of Emperor Joseph II stands in remarkable contrast to that of his parents. • A real spectacle, well worth a visit. The craftsmanship is wonderful. The resting place of Sisi too. I would recommend a look especially if you have been to see the Sisi museum.

  • This was great. It showed how the rich and famous of the Times died and were kept. The coffins are so ornate and over the top, but equally great to see and read. This is free attraction with the...

  • Quiet steep ticketprices for what is, in the end, basically a several rooms of, albeit very nice looking, grave tombs. Ideally to get an idea of the many ages this family controlled large swats of Europe and the wealth they acquired. (it's pretty ironic that even dead they keep earning money from 'the common citizen' 🤓)
  • This is by far the best place ever, I mean so much effort has been put into those tombs and coffins, you can feel the grandeur but also the peace, it is a bit difficult to explain, but must visit and see with your own eyes
