Built about 696 CE, it lays claim to being the oldest monastery in the German-speaking world. St. Rupert founded the monastery at the site of a Late Antique church. Enter the abbey church to see how the Romanesque facade transforms into a Rococo interior. You can view the organs at which Mozart's wife, Constanze, sang at the premiere of his Great Mass in C Minor. Look for the rock tomb--the original tomb of St. Rupert--next to his altar. We didn’t have the time to go inside, but the exterior, with its classic onion dome, is beautiful and invites photos. The Abbey has a long, long history of community engagement and education.

Very nice area. There is a nice plaza with fountain. A little gift shop has very reasonable items for sale. You can also catch a glimpse of the oldest restaurant still operating.

This was my very favorite church & cemetery! And I LOVED the catacombs too! So much history. Incredibly beautiful church with all the paintings. Amazing!
