Create an itinerary including Nonnberg Convent
Made famous thanks to the movie "The Sound of Music," Nonnberg Convent is both one of the area's oldest religious buildings and a symbol of the city. Visit the convent, founded in 714, and explore the grounds to see the living quarters and daily surroundings of the nuns who called it home. Within, you'll discover crypts, medieval frescoes, religious decorations, and a mix of architectural styles ranging from Romanesque to Gothic. If you're a fan of the famous film, keep in mind that the woman known as Maria von Trapp once lived here, and her life later inspired the movie. As the complex sits above much of the rest of the city on a low hill, peeking out the windows can afford you a sweeping view over the rooftops and across to the forested hills beyond. • So peaceful! Beautiful convent! Heard nuns singing. Nice views too! Great tree that hangs in the little cemetery.

  • Discovered this place by chance on just a random wandering up a hill. It turned out to be a real highlight. Quiet, with lovely views.

  • You are here to take photos outside of this ancient convent. You can't get in. A certain Von Trapp wedding took place here (for real it did) . Make sure you've had your weetabix as it's a steep hill to negotiate. Vertigo inducing heights over the town, but terrific views to be had. Informative bilingual signs explain the unique geology. Get a photo by that famous entrance. Then get back to the main tourist amenities in the town. Another tick on that sound of music tour list. If that's not why you've come here, I'm not sure you'll rate the experience.
  • Very nice reciving here!
