Situated inside a converted electric station, Powerhouse Museum houses a huge collection of art and artifacts celebrating applied science and design. The museum is known for kid-friendly interactive displays and popular shows featuring props from films such as "Star Wars" and "Harry Potter." You can visit a number of permanent exhibitions, including one displaying a life-size model of a Space Shuttle cockpit. Other exhibits highlight the steam engine revolution and modern cyber technology. Arguably, the most popular exhibit is The Strasbourg Clock Model, a working replica of the famous Strasbourg Cathedral astronomical clock. This is a really classy place. It is done really well and my highly intelligent grandchildren from regional Australia had the most amazing experience. They were so excited by the space technology and historical railway exhibitions. What surprised me was the fun they had with the interactive scientific experiments. The fine arts didn't go down as well but appreciated. This was free and as a grandmother trying to entertain her grandchildren in school holidays this was such an all round treat for us all. Thank you NSW govt.
This is a brilliant museum, I had only been to the powerhouse museum once in the past, but have fond memories, even though I was young. All the hands on exhibits are great for kids, with the lab area being a highlight. The rest of the exhibits are fascinating, ranging from cars to satellites to old trains to pottery. Everything is well presented, with plenty to read and learn, or just stroll through and enjoy. Definitely recommend, both with kids or without.
