In 2017 we celebrate the 30th Birthday of the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden. The Garden has a wonderfully interesting history, founded on the traditional land of the Gundungarra and Darug Aboriginal people which in 1804 was traversed by explorer George Caley on a botanic collecting trip.

The Garden sits on 252 hectares of land with 28 hectares open to the public and is home to 21,000 plants and 900 species.

The Garden is the only botanic garden in the world in a World Heritage Area and is focused on the conservation of cool climate plants. Over the next five years we are revisiting, and returning The Garden to the original vision for the site while aspiring to be the model garden for sustainable practices on a global stage.

Our educational, cultural and artistic events including exhibitions and workshops are set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Garden, reflecting the stunning surrounds.

We are located under 2-hours’ drive from the Sydney airport and less than an hour from Penrith and Richmond.

  • I love gardens and this is my favourite. I travel quite a few kilometres to go there. The gardens are unique, so well tended and arranged. Just beautiful now as the autumn colours emerge. This is my place for a wonderful sense of well-being. It will be good when the cafe reopens. Don't miss a visit.
  • Many different environments within the gardens, both formal and natural. The restaurant hasn't operated in some time and no tender has been called for the lease. However there is a snack bar open on 4 days of the week. Wheel chairs and mobility walkers will find the hills hard to manage and many of the pathways are gravelled and narrow, hard to manage if you're not fit. For those who are fully mobile it is a very worthwhile park to visit.
