Noted for its rose bushes, Cave Gardens provided fresh water to early European settlers in this area. The rose garden was planted over a century ago by Paul Krummel, the site’s first official curator. Stop by for a leisurely picnic on the grass, or venture down into the cave, accessible by suspended viewing platforms that reveal a vibrant underground world, located within walking distance of the center of the city. During heavy rains a waterfall forms from storm water overflow, eventually entering a deeper underground water system feeding the nearby lakes. The cave is lit during the night, making it a popular stop for after-dark explorers and adventurers. Plan a Mount Gambier trip in moments using our itinerary builder.

  • This is quite a surprise find in the middle of town, it would have been nice to have the water running but neither the less it was very nice place.

  • This was an interesting sink hole in the centre of town and worthy of a look. It is not as impressive as some others around.

  • If you go to South Australia, you definitely need to visit this place. Mt Gambier is a town on limestone and you see many sink-hole like this there. They have created a sunken garden out of it. Bees are everywhere and you see their hives everywhere at the rocks down there. There are stairs you need to use to get down and climb back up. There are street car parks around the area so you will be able to find a parking spot. Definitely visit it!
  • Came at the wrong time of the year for this one..needed to be in the middle of Spring or in early Summer when flowering
