  • This is where they roasted quartz, the buildings are crumbling, you aren't allowed inside the brickwork but there is a plaque to read. You drive to a parking lot and then walk to the roasting pits...

  • An interesting site constructed for the purpose of gold extraction from quartz rock. No entry fee and open to the public 24/7 Directions start from the Royal Hotel as this is an easy landmark to identify and locate. **Note** You will travel on sections of unsealed roads to get to the Roasting Pits. These roads are suitable for the average car. - Travel north on the Hill End Road for 5.7km heading towards Tambaroora, Mudgee. This is the only sealed section of road. - Turn left onto Ullamalla Rd and continue for a further 1.9km. - Turn Right onto Alpha Rd and continue for a further 2.6km until you arrive at the roasting pits car parking area. Walking from the carpark you enter the area through a turnstile and then it is a short 150m stroll to the stone roasting pits. There are information signs explaining the history and function of the roasting pit complex and the locations of various other structures, housing, dams, quarry and stamper battery. If just wanting to see the roasting pits it is easy going on foot, fairly flat and clear walking. If wanting to walk to the earth dam wall and other building locations here I would recommend good sturdy enclosed footwear as there are no set paths to these locations with tall grass, depending on the time of year.
  • Amazing! They cooked the quartz in these ovens! Such an interesting area .. loaded with Ausie history
