The Fremantle Round House
Given the country's history as a penal colony, it might not surprise you that Western Australia's oldest public building is a former prison. Built in 1830, the rotund white-brick The Fremantle Round House originally housed convicted prisoners before becoming a police lockup. The chief constable and his family began to occupy the building in 1900. Today, you can tour the seaside building and ask knowledgeable volunteer guides questions. Head to the upper deck for scenic views of the Fremont coast and offshore islands. To visit The Fremantle Round House and get the most from your holiday in Fremantle, create itinerary details personal to you using our Fremantle trip planner.

Excellent view of the surrounds and beaches from the top. Can’t believe they housed 70 prisoners there while the Fremantle jail was built. Recommend having a look and walk around this historical...

Fantastic location and views. We walked around the grounds and enjoyed Bathers beach. The place is clean and well kept. A piece of Fremantle's history. Nice place to visit and absorb the historical past of this Port City.

Gorgeous little place with a rich history and knowledgeable staff. Gold coins donation. Walk around the grounds and see the old residences and explore the underground tunnel.. 1pm daily has the firing of the cannon and bell drop. Lawns are lovely place to have a rest or some lunch. Easy walking distance to lunch stops on Bathers Beach and a stunning view over Fremantle Harbour. Fantastic photo opportunities if, like me, you are on holiday..!
