Josephine's Gallery and Kangaroo Orphanage
Feed, pet, and photograph kangaroos at Josephine's Gallery and Kangaroo Orphanage, which also includes an aboriginal art gallery with one-of-a-kind art pieces, available for shipping anywhere in the world. This unusual kangaroo orphanage, combining several tourist attractions in one, primarily cares for animals injured by cars, an unfortunate but frequent occurrence in this part of the world. Below the orphanage you can also visit a mine, where you can learn about various forms of opal mining. The on-site museum is known for its displays of black opals, brought here from some of Australia’s major opal mines. Don’t leave without a stop at the well-stocked gift shop, selling souvenirs for every budget, including didgeridoos, opal jewelry, and aboriginal art reproductions. Put Josephine's Gallery and Kangaroo Orphanage into our Coober Pedy trip planner to see other points of interest to visit during your vacation in Coober Pedy.

The art is genuine and should meet most taste, prices seen fair for the work. Unfortunately, the kangaroo orphan visits were booked out.

If you have kids, then this place is a must. Our two loved seeing the orphaned joey there, Billy Bob. They even got to cuddle him which was a highlight for them. Unfortunately we weren't able to make the feeding later that day but am sure they would've loved this too. Amazing facility and care for kangaroos.

Jo and Terry, who run this place, are the most wonderful people with the biggest hearts. Apart from running a gallery full of wonderful Aboriginal art and selling some opal jewellery (this is Coober Pedy, after all), they also run a kangaroo orphanage - but they'll take in any injured wildlife. They hold kangaroo talks 5.30 pm Mon-Sat, gallery opening hours depend on traffic and season. The lovely Judy also helps out with running of the gallery and caring for the joeys. There's $10 ($5 child) admittance charge but donations are very much appreciated as they don't get any government or other funding and all their money (just like any other wildlife carers in Australia) are spent on the kangaroos. Terry has an amazing knowledge of the Aboriginal art so if you want to learn a thing or three, ask him! Definitely a must if you're in Coober or just passing through!
