  • Leonid Yengibarov was born in Moscow to an Armenian father and a Russian mother. He started his career as a boxer. In 1955 he joined the State School of Circus Art, Clownship department. He graduated from Circus school with skills in juggling, acrobatics, and hand balancing. After graduation in 1959 he moved to Yerevan and joined the Armenian state circus. He was one of the first Soviet clowns to create the poetic, intellectual clownery, which made spectators think, not only laugh. Leonid Yengibarov, 'the clown with sad eyes', revolutionized the art of clownery by introducing lyrical tones into traditional buffoonery and grotesque sequences.
  • With the assistance of the Ministry of Culture of Armenia in the resort town of Tsaghkadzor since 2008. the International Festival of Pantomime named after Leonid Yengibarov is held. Theater troupes perform right on the streets of the city and gather crowds of spectators. In addition to Armenian artists, mimes and pantomime theater artists from Italy, Japan, Turkey, Denmark, and Poland take part in the festival. Within the framework of the Third International Pantomime Festival on the main square of Tsaghkadzor on August 13, 2012, a bronze monument to the legendary mime clown Leonid Yengibarov was unveiled (sculptor - D. Minasyan). The sculpture is based on the well-known Yengibar image “Flying with an umbrella”. Clown mime, acting in the role of "sad clown", writer. People's Artist of the Armenian SSR.
