Admire an ancient fortification built on a steep cliff at Tatev Monastery, a 9th-century Armenian Apostolic complex. Erected on a basalt plateau carved into fort walls, the monastery overlooks a deep gorge of the Vorotan River. It once hosted an important medieval university, and was a center for the sciences, philosophy, and book illumination. Observe the fortified walls on a massive cliff, exquisitely carved entrance arches to the church, and its round bell tower covered by an evenly rayed cupola. The compound also includes an ancient olive oil mill with stone grinders and the tomb of Gregory of Tatev, the last Armenian saint, who died here in 1410. Take the funicular--the world's longest nonstop double-track cable car--to reach the village of Halidzor. • Great place, awesome history, amazing views. The only downside is the very long way from Yerevan. Hard to do in one day. Wish we stayed overnight in Tatev. The aerial road is so long! More than 3...

  • I love old structures. I am amazed seeing at the monasteries with all its rooms still in tact to this date. If you have ample time, enter the rooms of the monastery and feel the vibes inside. Ita alao amazing that during summer when i visited, the weather ia hot especially when you are under the sun but when you go inside the rooms in the monastery, the windows are small, just enough for light to enter but it is cool inside.
  • Tatev Monastery is located on a large plateau near the village of Tatev in the Syunik province, southeastern of Armenia. The monastery stands on the edge of a deep gorge of the Vorotan river. Getting there was breathtakingly amazing through Wings of Tatev. You can take all the pictures you want, however, when you go inside, be mindful of those who prayed-be solemn and offer respect. One of the must-visit place while visiting Armenia.
