Experience a remarkable view of Mount Ararat near the fenced border with Turkey at Khor Virap. The monastery serves as a pilgrimage site where Armenia's patron saint--Gregory the Illuminator--was imprisoned for 14 years by King Tiridates II. Inside the enclosed compound, explore the elaborate altar in the Church of the Holy Mother of God, as well as a 60 m (200 ft) deep pit-prison built underneath St. Gevorg Chapel. Expect to climb many stairs to reach the monastery, and bring your walking shoes. Great place with great history. We have visited the place with my wife. A beautiful scenery. Very close to the border, you can see Turkish side clearly.

The church itself was a but ho-hum, but the setting was fabulous. It is built on a hill with Mount Ararat as a backdrop.

Definitely one of the nicest monasteries in Armenia. It is at the Turkish border and in the background you can see the great Ararat mountain. You can park the car at the beginning and then walk a bit upwards. Parking cost me 500amd, not sure if this is the normal price, at other monasteries it was 200amd. The entrance to the monastery is free. Go a bit early if you want to avoid big crowds and make sure to read a bit about the monastery before visiting it. There’s not a lot of information there.

Khor Virab (Khor Virap Monastery) is definitely one of the amazing Monastery in Armenia as the view is just breathtakingly wonderful with the Mount Ararat in the backdrop. It very near to the closed border of Turkey, so expect that if you're a tourist your phone will receive a notification welcoming you to Turkey's mobile phone network operator as it happens to all of us when we were there. In the Monastery, you can go down to the underground confinement, however, we didn't try as we are afraid of the very narrow stairway. It's really worth visiting if you are in Armenia. Please be mindful and respect those who are praying when entering the Church.
