Experience a remarkable view of Mount Ararat near the fenced border with Turkey at Khor Virap. The monastery serves as a pilgrimage site where Armenia's patron saint--Gregory the Illuminator--was imprisoned for 14 years by King Tiridates II. Inside the enclosed compound, explore the elaborate altar in the Church of the Holy Mother of God, as well as a 60 m (200 ft) deep pit-prison built underneath St. Gevorg Chapel. Expect to climb many stairs to reach the monastery, and bring your walking shoes. • Very amazing monestry building close to Turkish border. Amazing view to mountain Ararat. Little out of yerevan, but with a car just 30 minutes + - more, but you found easy trip from travel agencies...

  • Great place, but don’t be sucked in by the stalls selling things! All the moonstone is fake! Don’t be fooled. Great view of mount ararat

  • Definitely one of the nicest monasteries in Armenia. It is at the Turkish border and in the background you can see the great Ararat mountain. You can park the car at the beginning and then walk a bit upwards. Parking cost me 500amd, not sure if this is the normal price, at other monasteries it was 200amd. The entrance to the monastery is free. Go a bit early if you want to avoid big crowds and make sure to read a bit about the monastery before visiting it. There’s not a lot of information there.
  • Want a calming & beautiful site. I would come every day if I could.
