Marvel at masterpieces of ancient Armenian stonemasonry at Noravank Monastery, an architectural ensemble set in the Amaghu River Gorge. Surrounded by dramatic red cliffs, this stone complex boasts the 14th-century double-decker Surb Astvatsatsin Church (Holy Mother of God), as well as Surb Karapet (St. John The Baptist), built in 1216-1227 while Latin crusaders held Constantinople. Both churches feature characteristic bell tower drums and conical roofs. Explore the complex further to discover a number of intriguing khachkars and important cave complexes. • We have visited so many monasteries, however this one stands out above the rest. Access to the church is via two steep and narrow staircases that don't have any handrails!

  • Noravank Monastery is situated in a gorge and just like other monastery in Armenia it has a very lovely surroundings. The main Church has two floors which you can reach the upper level by the steep path in front of the Church, however, (unfortunately) when we visited this July 2022, it is not allowed to go up anymore. Hopefully, they will think of something how to safely go up the second level. We enjoy the picturesque surrounding and seeing the red canyons. Its worth the travel and highly recommended for all.
  • In my opinion the nicest monastery of Armenia. It is located in a mountain area which offers a wide range of colors and amazing views. The road to get here is already worth it (if you take the scenic route, not the highway) You can go inside the monasteries, however be careful when walking up the stairs of the big monastery as it is very narrow. Make sure to get here early if you want to have it for yourself. The parking is 200AMD and you can park the car up the hill.
