Marvel at the mastery of ancient bricklayers at Great Minaret of the Kalon, which dominates the landscape of Bukhara. Built in 1127 by Aslan Khan as a part of Po-i-Kalyan mosque, the carved, baked brick minaret stands 47 m (154 ft) and features 14 ornamental bands, the first use of glazed blue tiles now characteristic of the region. Once the tallest building in Central Asia, this giant mace-looking tower includes an observation deck--a rotunda with 16 carved arched fenestrations and a former execution site--for a great panorama of Bukhara. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Bukhara holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Great Minaret of the Kalon and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.
