Hestan Vineyards is a picturesque, 237-acre ranch located on Napa Valley’s eastern slopes at the base of Okell Hill. The vineyard is named for owners Stanley and Helen Cheng, whose passion for fine wines and love for Napa Valley led them to purchase the property in 1996.Choose to start, finish, or center your holiday on a trip to Hestan Vineyards by using our Yountville trip itinerary planner.
The Chengs immediately set about planting grapes to their new property, adding blocks over the years to take advantage of the site’s various exposures and well-drained soils. Today, 56 acres of individually farmed blocks planted to all five Bordeaux varietals – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec – blanket the rolling hills overlooking the property’s 11-acre pond.
In 2005, after years spent building the vineyard’s reputation by selling grapes to well-known Napa Valley wineries, Stanley and Helen released their first wines from the property. Made by consulting winemaker Mark Herold, the wines–the 2002 Hestan Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon and a second label, the 2002 Meyer Cabernet Sauvignon–were a critical success, further establishing the provenance of Hestan Vineyards.
In 2008, the Chengs expanded their wine portfolio with the release of Stephanie, a line made by consulting winemaker Jeff Gaffner that is named for their daughter and showcases all five Bordeaux varietals planted at Hestan.
Never ones to rest on their laurels, the Chengs hired Thomas Rivers Brown in 2009 to take over production of the Hestan Wines beginning with the ‘09 vintage. Brown, considered one of the rising stars of Napa Valley, boasts a stellar portfolio including Schrader, Outpost and Rivers Marie. In October 2008, Thomas made history as the youngest winemaker to receive two perfect "100 point" scores from Robert M. Parker.
“We feel very excited and privileged,” notes Stanley, “to have winemakers of such accomplishment interpret our vineyards’ terroir in such wonderfully expressive styles. We think our entire portfolio of wines—Hestan, Meyer and Stephanie—will continue to improve with each vintage.”
