Solitary Geyser is a fountain-type geyser in Yellowstone National Park, located above the Upper Geyser Basin. Eruptions last about a minute and are four to eight minutes apart; most eruptions are less than six feet (1.8 m) in height. It is very distinctive with clear blue water underneath and a base that is tinted orange. Solitary Geyser is accessible via the Observation Point loop trail behind Old Faithful.Add Solitary Geyser to your Yellowstone National Park travel itinerary, and discover new vacation ideas by using our Yellowstone National Park road trip planner.
Originally this geyser was a hot spring known as Solitary Spring, which did not erupt. When water was diverted to a swimming pool, the water level was lowered sufficiently to cause eruptions. Since then the diversion of water has been stopped and the water has returned to its previous level, but eruptions continue.
Solitary Geyser reviews
The Solitary Geyser is perhaps a third mile hike starting from the Geyser Hill boardwalk (or as a side route from the Old Faithful Observation Point hike). The Geyser is more of a short 3-5 foot... more »
This geyser is located up the hill close to the Old Faithful. It is not as busy as you need to take a little hike there, upwards. Easy doable and nice to do after seeing the Old Faithful. more »
Some people will diss this geyser because of its 4ft height, but it’s still pretty cool. It erupts approximately every 5-7 minutes. I stayed for five eruptions. The size and longevity differ between each eruption. Sometimes the height would be about two feet and last about 90 seconds, other times it would be 4 feet tall and last 30 seconds. It was so cool! Take a lunch, sit, and enjoy the frequent eruptions. Make sure to stay in the designated trail area- there is fragile ground!
