Hayden Valley, Yellowstone National Park

#2 of 18 in Wildlife in Yellowstone National Park
Enter a wildlife paradise at Hayden Valley, an ancient lake bed and the world's largest stomping grounds of free-roaming bison. Take one of the two trails, observe, and be patient. Herds of buffalo, elks, coyotes, and the occasional grizzly bear frequent the area to graze, drink, and feed. The valley abounds with rivers, creeks, and ponds, but fishing is off-limits so just enjoy the views of the waterfowl, including ducks, geese, and pelicans. A number of roadside turn-offs offer sweeping views of the valley. Stick to the path when hiking, since off-trail exploration on foot is forbidden. • The Hayden Valley is an ideal place to observe wildlife in Yellowstone. Many animals are especially in the early morning or late afternoon / early evening. Well, the bison are always flocks. We took us a day and have wandered off the many different viewpoints, and parking. While of course we saw many bison. As well, a Wolf before the lens has come us, moose, bear, deer. To observe or photograph, but long lenses are recommended. A good pair of binoculars can be very helpful. You afraid not many locals to speak also. These give very much information about where the animals can be seen. Because they are often not so easy to spot.

  • August is supposedly the mating season for bisons so we got to see hundreds of them in Hayden valley although we were expecting to. It was easily the biggest highlight of the day as we got to watch them rutting, fighting, feeding their young ones and casually walking past our vehicles grunting softly! Just remember never to show your cockiness to them because even if they don't mean to, their sheer body weight (which can be 2000lb in males) can injure you badly.
  • Beautiful area with lots of wildlife. The views are breathtaking. We were there end of August, lots of bison. They caused a few traffic jams.
