Bellamy Mansion, Wilmington

#1 of 10 in Museums in Wilmington
The Bellamy Mansion is one of North Carolina's most spectacular examples of antebellum architecture. It was built on the eve of the Civil War by free and enslaved black artisans, for John Dillard Bellamy (1817-1896) physician, planter and business leader and his wife, Eliza McIlhenny Harriss (1821-1907) and their nine children. After the fall of Fort Fisher in 1865, Federal troops commandeered the house as their headquarters during the occupation of Wilmington.

The Mansion offers an exquisite backdrop to create an event of historic proportions. Far from your typical banquet hall, the Mansion is one of North Carolina's premier historic treasures, featuring lush gardens, grand columns, wrap-around porches, brass chandeliers, Victorian-style carpets, ornate molding, and marble fireplaces.

The museums gallery spaces feature changing exhibits on architectural history, historic preservation and the designs arts. You and your guests will enjoy an event in close proximity to beaches, shopping, nightlife, restaurants, the historic riverwalk, and plenty of charming B&Bs and hotels. • We are so thankful a piece of gorgeous history has been restored and preserved for the public to visit! Must see!  more »
  • We used the audio files found on the website to guide us through the house and outdoor buildings. Great visit - and the house was also being decorated for Christmas so an extra treat.  more »

  • Very fun and interesting! Our tour guide was excellent. We really enjoyed how thorough the tour was around the gardens and in the house and slave quarters. It was great that after the tour, we were free to roam the property as much as we wanted in detail. Learning the history of the family was our favorite part.
  • Beth C. did an excellent job providing historical info and details about the Bellamy family. The guided tour was the best way to go, as she was able to share different snippets and also answer questions. This gave a great view of the urban life of the elite class in the Civil.War Era. It also was interesting to learn about how strongly the Old South Ways and ideas flowed even into the middle 1900s! Excellent tour guide and 2 hour activity. Group was children through elderly.
