Washington National Cathedral, Washington DC

Modeled on English medieval-style churches, Washington National Cathedral represents one of the largest cathedrals in the United States and the world. Originally begun in 1907 by President Theodore Roosevelt, the final piece was finally placed in 1990 by President George H.W. Bush, and accents and decorative work continued for even longer. Of particular note in the church is the organ, constructed of more than 8,000 pipes. Look for the grave of President Woodrow Wilson. Consult the cathedral's schedule if you'd like to attend an Episcopal religious service. • We watched the July 4th fireworks from the Cathedral grounds and what a view. Very nice area and enjoyed the fireworks. Since it was dark, we could not really enjoy the Cathedral.  more »

  • You do not have to be a religious person to thoroughly enjoy this monumental structure. A true Cathedral and one of the largest in the entire world, it took many many years to complete. The stained-glass work alone is worth the visit. I thoroughly enjoyed the guided tour which took approximately 45 minutes, and helped me to understand what I was looking at. I would strongly recommend this as a part of a visit to the Washington DC sites, or if you are inclined, as a place for your worship.
  • Seeing the Cathedral for the first time is truly breathtaking. When I turned the corner and saw it, I was so stunned with how beautiful and huge the building was! I feel like the look of this building makes you think that it should have been built in Europe centuries ago. The features on the outside of the building are so unique and it has the most gorgeous stain glass windows all around the building and even more inside. I was most surprised at how big it really was on the outside. Even the main hall was cool to look at and definitely worth making the trip for.
