First Landing State Park is a recreational area with a cypress swamp, woods, and hiking trails. Enjoy 32 km (20 mi) of trails in the woods, as well as a beach that stretches 2.4 km (1.5 mi) along the Chesapeake Bay. A small entrance fee gets you access for the day. Near the first landing site of the Virginia Company colonists in 1607, the area has played an important role in every era of American history. The park was built by an African-American Civilian Conservation Corps between 1933 and 1940. First Landing State Park Reviews
Miles of beautiful trails for all skill levels. A nice get away inside the city. A good way to see the local wildlife. more »
We heading to the State park for a quick walk after lunch, before heading to the beach. Trails are SUPER well marked and beautiful! It was very quiet (though the frogs made themselves heard). Great.... more »
Absolutely stunning park! Both the hiking trails and beach side are gorgeous natural areas. I found the beach to be very clean and not super crowded. Tons of beautiful seabirds including droves of pelicans. One might be lucky enough to find good shells or sea stones. The trails were immaculate and it seems most folks respect nature here. They are a mix of Boardwalk and dirt paths. So many different types of trees and even some Spanish moss! The education center is great for kids and adults, and teaches about the local wildlife and foliage. This is a great day for people of all ages, plus dog friendly. Peaceful and educational! The rangers I met are so pleasant as well. Five stars!
So close to the VA Beach boardwalk, but it feels like it's a world away. Gentle waves. Cute ghost crabs. Awesome if you want to go to the beach without getting stuck in stores half the day. Also Awesome camping experience. They have educational back packs that you can borrow to learn more about nature, native Americans, crabbing, fishing, etc.
