The location of the first rifled cannon test, Fort Pulaski National Monument was an important site in the American Civil War. The success of the cannon test rendered brick forts obsolete. The Union army asked Colonel Charles H. Olmstead, commander of the Confederate garrison, to surrender before using the cannon. They hoped he would accept and prevent needless loss of life. The colonel refused to surrender, and the Union army pummeled the fort in a siege that lasted only one day. This fort was mainly used as a prisoner-of-war camp because of its isolation on Cockspur Island surrounded by a moat. You'll find sleeping quarters and rooms where the colonel signed his surrender preserved inside the fort. Fort Pulaski National Monument Reviews
Fort Pulaski is a great experience for Civil War and military history buffs. Our tour guide was excellent. more »
I had very low expectations for this national monument. I'd seen many old forts and, frankly, I was bored with them. Fort Pulaski surprised me though. The underground bunkers outside the fort sorted.... more »
Really fun seeing this historic monument. The preservation of the fort is actually spectacular and gives visitors a meaningful enriching lesson into the past of our country. Get a tour with the rangers, we had Elizabeth and she was outstanding. She provided interesting little known facts that made the visit all the more intriguing. Very worth driving out to explore, wish we could have stayed longer but Hurricane Dorian forced the park to close a little early. Still an outstanding visit.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Fort Pulaski. This is a beautiful fort with a very rich and interesting history. We sat through a discussion about the reason for the fort's build, and then the battles the fort endured (against weather and man). The discussion was fantastic. My kids and I found Fort Pulaski to be fascinating. The staff is very knowledgeable and there is plenty to do. We stayed for half the day and wish we had set aside more time. We did not even make it out to the Beach nor did we have enough time to watch the video. We will definitely visit again the next time we make it to the area.
