Zion Canyon Visitor Center, Springdale

4.5
Zion Canyon is a deep and narrow gorge in southwestern Utah, United States, carved by the North Fork of the Virgin River. Nearly the entire canyon is located within the western half of Zion National Park.
The beginning of the canyon is usually delineated as the Temple of Sinawava, a vertical-walled natural amphitheater nearly 3000ft deep. The canyon actually begins much further upstream, however, and runs southward about 16mi through the Narrows to reach the Temple, where a seasonal tributary of the North Fork plunges over a tall waterfall during spring runoff and after heavy rain. The gorge then runs southwest through the national park, approaching 2000ft deep in places. While the canyon rim is dominated by desert, the canyon floor supports a forest and riparian zone watered by the North Fork Virgin River. The gorge then merges with Pine Creek Canyon as it winds out of the national park and past the community of Springdale. The canyon's end is where it meets the Virgin River, some 100mi northeast of Lake Mead, which the river ultimately flows into.
Zion Canyon Drive and Zion-Mount Carmel Highway are the two major roads throughout the canyon. Zion Canyon Drive ends at the Temple of Sinawava, where the Riverside Walk trail follows the river upstream to the lower end of the Zion Narrows. Hiking trails further upstream descend into the Narrows, where the canyon floor is on average 20ft wide. Hiking is permitted in the Narrows when water levels are low enough, however, flash floods are known to rise quickly following heavy rainstorms. Many areas in the drainage of Zion Canyon have little or no soil cover, contributing to extremely brief but heavy storm runoff. In contrast, the floor of most of the main Zion Canyon is close to 1000ft wide, and is rich with river-deposited sediments. Tributaries to the river within the canyon include Deep, Kolob, Goose, Pine, and Oak Creeks.

  • Great place. Lot of visitors. Rude people. Great place. The shuttle bus drivers are the best. On one ride out driver was named Russ, and he told great stores and provided snippets of information the entire ride. It was fantastic. The natural beauty is a welcome break from the 40 hour work week. Lots of visitors. And rude people everywhere. Like ants. And they're obviously bitter about it. Watching people cut in line at bus stops. Waiting for people who've decided to stop and block the trail because they must have that whatever they're trying to dig out of their bag right now. Individuals hoarding entire seating areas for their party - which hasn't arrived yet... Photo bombing ignorants. Etc. Great visit. Hike from the visitors center to the museum to avoid that hour-long shuttle line. And if you think you can pull it off, hike the whole thing. Much better.
  • Such a unique feel at the Zions Park Visitors center. Check out the shuttle schedules and be sure to account for the time they'll take. Early April was perfect season to visit. Temperatures were perfect! Lower Emrald Pool was an excellent kids hike, for even a 4 year old. Well worth the little hike to see and hike behind the Waterfall(s).
