The Nez Perce National Historical Park is a United States National Historical Park comprising 38 sites located throughout the states of Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington, which included traditional aboriginal lands of the Nez Perce people. The sites are strongly associated with the resistance of Chief Joseph and his band, who in June 1877 took off from Oregon in an attempt to reach freedom in Canada and avoid being forced on to a reservation. They were pursued by U.S. Army cavalry forces and fought numerous skirmishes against them.

The park was established in 1965, and a museum was opened at the park headquarters in Spalding, Idaho, in 1983.

The 38 sites span three main ecoregions, covering a wide range of elevations and climate. Numerous animal species inhabit the park, including several that are considered sensitive.

  • The Visitor Center is not much. If you are from Idaho and drive this route a lot like I do, you should stop in, but you won’t see many artifacts at the Center and the walking trails, etc near there.....  more »
  • Short film regarding nez perce and informative talk after taking about 30 min. Self guided tour about the nature and animals of the area. Trails available to hike around  more »

  • This review is mostly for the visitor center, as the park spans many miles and is made up of many historical sites throughout the quad-state area. The museum is small, but filled with beautiful pieces of historical and cultural value from the Nez Perce people. A short 20 minute video is well worth your time. The staff is so friendly and knowledgeable.
  • Fantastic slice of history. Very informative. Helpful guides. Good videos and displays. Historic photos. Very good You can spend an hour and walk out knowing a little more about history.
