San Francisco Zoo hosts gardens and habitats with over 1,000 animals from more than 250 species. Among numerous mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and invertebrates, you'll have a chance to see the largest colony of Magellanic penguins in captivity. You'll also have the chance to examine insect specimens under a microscope and observe a large selection of live arthropods, including centipedes, hissing cockroaches, termites, tarantulas, and bees. The zoo hosts exhibits of Africa and South America with their native animals, aviary, large cat, bear and primate centers, and a children's zoo with a feeding and petting farm. San Francisco Zoo reviews
A true wildlife oasis in the middle of San Francisco. From penguins to giraffes to koala bears to Komodo dragons, the San Fransisco Zoo has it all. And it's just a short ride away from downtown SF on.... more »
Just an OK zoo. Can’t even compare with San Diego zoo. In Bay Area, Oakland Zoo is better. Pros: good location in sf; close to the Pacific Ocean; weather is all year long cool there; has rhino and... more »
I'm accustomed to the Oregon Zoo, which is pretty nice but this was a fun change of pace. Very cool exhibits with animals I've never seen before. The animals look reasonably stimulated and happy, no bored pacing or other distressing behaviors which is great to see. The zoo puts a big focus on conservation which is also great. There's lots of nice trees and foliage shading the paths and the zoo is well maintained. Overall an excellent trip. The cassowary and lemurs were my favorites.
Great exhibits and the zoo helps support many local charities. Lots of animals here have been rescued and could not otherwise survive in the wild. They are also working on giving many animals larger enclosures such as the snow leopard and monkeys. The lemur exhibit in particular is fantastic. They have lots of room and areas to play, but it’s also easy to get a great view.
