The House of the Seven Gables embodies Salem's rich history. The house was built in 1668 for Captain John Turner, one of the wealthiest men in the Massachusetts Colony. Nathaniel Hawthorne immortalized the building in an 1851 gothic novel that carries the house’s name. Today, the mansion is a nonprofit museum that celebrates American history and Hawthorne's work. The museum offers guided tours through immaculate gardens and rooms equipped with historically accurate antiques. There are regular educational events, workshops, and period performances. My sister and I had the pleasure of visiting the House of Seven Gables and it was such a wonderful experience! Our tour guide was very interesting and knowledgeable and made the tour of the house even more enjoyable. The house itself was very interesting and it was amazing to see how well preserved it is. The house contains so many amazing features and it was very intriguing learning about the entire history of the property and the various owners. The gardens surrounding the property are so beautiful, as is the view of the ocean and all the boats. I felt the entrance fee was very reasonable and the money is used for a great cause, so it was worth it. I would highly recommend others to visit the House of Seven Gables!
Easily a 5-star review. Tour guide was hands down one of the best we had in the area. You could tell he really enjoyed his job. The house is amazing and we really enjoyed being able to learn about it's history. Definitely worth a trip.
