Inglenook, Rutherford

4.3
Inglenook was founded in 1879 by Gustave Niebaum, a Finnish sea captain who used his enormous wealth to import the best European grapevines to Napa. Over the next several decades under the guidance of the legendary John Daniel, Inglenook built a reputation as the source of some of the finest wines ever made. By 1975, however, when Francis and Eleanor Coppola first purchased part of the famed property, the Inglenook Estate had long since been broken up and its name sold off. The Coppolas spent the next twenty years reuniting the vineyards and restoring winemaking to the historic Inglenook Chateau. Today, in addition to the Cabernet Sauvignon that dominates the Estate, the Inglenook acreage is also planted with Zinfandel, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, and six acres of white Rhone varietals that produce the estate's flagship white, Blancaneaux. Inglenook is now completely restored to original dimensions and is once again America's great wine estate.

  • One of the estates owned by Francis Ford Coppola. It's kinda hard to get in: for a glass at the counter, you have to stop at the gate and ask if there's room, then they allow you to go. Their wine master used to work for Chateau Latour: effects on the wine are good - one of the best you'll get around here.
  • What was a passion for Gamays and Cabernets as a 15-year old...okay, so I had parents who let me collect wine in the late 70s, despite this, my favorites were bottled under a Rutherford label....well, within the last few years my past great fortune was reunited with THE Chateau after discovering Napa was a day trip from my home in Nevada. Today, I am a self-confessed Inglenook Heritage Society Member. The wine that was the best of its day, is once again, just fantastic. Wine club. I signed up for a case each of Cabernet and Rubicon annually, tastings, dinner invitations, travel opportunities, and other niceties to opt in/participate. Normally there are multiple additional discounts and offerings as the grapes allow. Well worth it if you have a couple of spare Napa weekends and a budget that allows some great bottles to enjoy now and perhaps lay down for many years (children who are left with your possessions need not worry --the Rubicons are good for 20-35 years, so lock them ((wines)) up)! This is a project that FFC has seen through and is now well past the initial historical goals of reunifying the estate. It is also apparent that his embrace of the future is without hesitation and directed at a quality beyond reproach of a limited offering of exceptional and elegant wines. The enthusiasm at Inglenook is noteworthy and uniquely Napa. In sum: a wonderful estate and experience. Call ahead to make a reservation. Standout, caring, and knowledgable staff. And, just perhaps, just the greatest success as a matured effort to fully restore the prominance of Inglenook, as Francis has vowed: Once again, and forever. Enjoy!
  • There are so many places to choose from in Napa, but this location has a great atmosphere and beautiful history of wine in the Valley. I have been a member for over 14 years and enjoy events such as lunches or dinners with paired wines, Harvest festivals, Crab and Lobster feeds and more. I love to bring friends and family for tastings or coffee and snacks in courtyard. Great wine, perfect "Rubicon" and service. Love this place!
  • Fantastic! It was exactly what we hoped for and more! David was the best! We learned so much and would recommend to those wanting to learn more about viticulture.
  • One of my favorite wineries in Napa. Great history and museum located on its property.
