Must see · State Park · Wildlife Area
One of Massachusetts' little-known natural treasures, Halibut Point State Park offers hiking trails, picnic areas, and sweeping ocean views. Once the site of a major granite quarry, the site is now completely filled with water. The park contains few trees and an abundance of bayberries, blueberries, and wildflowers. Although the shallow soil and constant winds support limited plant ecosystems, the park shelters varied animal life, including snails, hermit crabs, sea stars, grebes, ducks, and loons. To discover the history of the region's granite-mining past, take a self-guided tour around the former quarry. Visit the website to download or print the park's brochure and a map of its main trails. • Beautiful and interesting park. Next to the rocky shore is an old quarry with an easy walking trail marked with historical and other information about the quarry process. There is also a fun search for kids and/or adults with a "treasure map" which can be found at the information booth in the parking lot. You can walk down to the ocean here, not so easy a walk as the rest of the trail, but worth the effort. Kiosk to pay for parking. Helpful park staff
  • Great place for a walk. Can bring dogs on leash. Beautiful scenery. Walk around lake in old granite pit and walk down to beach. You can also walk to overlook for beautiful ocean view
