Set on a high bluff overlooking the Puget Sound, Fort Worden State Park is home to beautiful scenery and a wealth of recreational activities. The park, which spans 176 hectares (434 acres), was once a U.S. Army base and features a number of historical military buildings here. The Coast Artillery Museum informs visitors about coastal military history, focusing particularly on Washington's Puget Sound. You can explore the park via its 27 km (17 mi) of hiking trails or 19 km (12 mi) of biking trails. Bring a picnic, if you like, to enjoy in the picnic areas overlooking the cliffs of Artillery Hill or Strait of Juan de Fuca. The Cable House Canteen includes a cafe and convenience store. Great park to take a beach walk, check out the old coastal defenses, or just enjoy a big grassy field. While they're not restored like Fort Casey across the water, the gun emplacements all have informative signage and are worth the walk on top the hill. The Marine Science Center is a must, and don't forget to grab a bite and a beer at Taps.
Beautiful beaches, calm waves. Not a lot of people when i went, but it was a weekday. Bathrooms are decent, one is accessible. The foot wash is convenient and has enough pressure to do the job right. Go to the batteries up the hill, too. Great place to explore and get out of the sun for a bit.
