The third largest museum in the country, Philadelphia Museum of Art holds a collection of more than 220,000 pieces, including masterpieces by Picasso, Dali, El Greco, Rubens, van Gogh, and Renoir. With an exterior familiar to most from the "Rocky" movies, the museum preserves the creative accomplishments of the entire world, containing over 200 galleries and spanning nearly 2,000 years of art history. The museum holds important artworks from Asia, notably a collection of Persian and Turkish carpets, as well as recreations of a Chinese palace hall, Japanese teahouse, and Indian temple. The European collection encompasses works from the Middle Ages to the present day, while the American galleries survey three centuries of painting, sculpture, and decorative arts. It’s collection , while not as massive as NY’s Met, is first class. The restaurant, when open, is very good. Cafeteria is okay. more »
If you love beauty, art and historic interiors, this is the place for you. The building is lovely, but so is everything it contains. We concentrated on art from 16th - 19th century, but there is also.... more »
Absolutely gorgeous. It took us about five hours to go through all of it. I really enjoyed the surrealist Salvador Dali's painting, I wish they had more by him. I believe they had a very nice assortment of artwork over all of the various time periods. Definitely up there with one of the nicest art museums I've been to. Highly recommended!
Very large was absolutely stunning. Took almost half the day to just explore a good portion of the museum. There were plenty of exhibits that would be pleasing to look at and had great deals for students. Definitely not a place you can just go for two hours as you’ll need the time to fully take in all of the exhibits. Was very clean and beautiful.
