Elfreth's Alley, Philadelphia

Historic Site · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Get an up-close look at one of the nation's oldest residential streets at Elfreth's Alley, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Head to the narrow cobbled lane and wander among its antique row houses dating from as far back as 1728. Admire the brick construction of the 32 historic colonial-era homes and explore the area, replete with reenactors, shops, and other businesses. You can even stop by the local museum to learn more about the street's past both before and after the United States' independence. • Elfreth's Alley is touted as the nation's oldest continuously inhabited residential street. Take a walk down this narrow cobblestone alleyway and take in the history that is preserved there.  more »

  • Although the community is rather small, this neighborhood is worth a stroll because if it’s historical significance if nothing else. The neighborhood, the streets, and houses are all well maintained, and it feels like you are literally transplant it back in time to walk through. If you’re not used to walking on really old roads or cobblestone, my advice is to wear thick-soled sturdy shoes.
  • What is not to love about getting to walk down the first residential Street in the United States of America? Quaint, charming, and tucked away out of sight in old City. It really makes you feel like a bit of a giant, due to how tiny people were back then. All in all it is a very cool little street and is definitely worth a walk down.
