Far Niente Winery, Oakville

#4 of 15 in Wineries in Oakville
Far Niente was founded in 1885 by John Benson, a forty-niner of the California gold rush and uncle of the famous American impressionist painter, Winslow Homer.

Far Niente prospered until the onset of Prohibition in 1919, when it was abandoned and left to fall into disrepair. Sixty years later, in 1979, Gil Nickel purchased the winery and adjacent vineyard and began a three-year restoration of the property.

During restoration, the original name, Far Niente, from an Italian phrase that romantically translated means "without a care," was found carved in stone on the front of the building where it remains to this day. We felt an obligation to preserve the name with the hope that we could recapture a bygone era when life was indeed without a care.

  • Absolutely spectacular and quintessential experience. This was our second time visiting after an absolutely amazing first time. Full disclosure, I proposed to my now fiancé here several months ago so this will always have an amazing place in our heart. The best word I can use to describe the property is whimsical. It’s almost like it is out of a fairy tail. Everything from the drive up, to the gardens, pond, vintage car collection, and the beautiful stone chateau is breathtaking. We did the cave tasting, which is hosted at the very top of the building in a private room overlooking the vineyard. The tasting starts with a Chardonnay and is followed by several vintage estate Cabs. We even tried a 1997 and it was incredible. Reed, our guide, was very personable and friendly. We requested to see the caves and he walked us through the caves and showed us around before. He was extremely knowledgeable and made for a great experience. We will be back soon!
  • Hands down the most beautiful place I visited. Gorgeous grounds! My husband and I enjoyed the estate tasting. Our guide was super knowledgeable and funny. The cheese pairings were on point and as always, their wine was out of this world. It was also nice to be able to taste a variety of price points (wines from their sister companies). I was a little nervous coming into this one since their wines are so pricey, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that it felt relaxed and welcoming. My only complaint (and this is minor) is that they work on a super tight schedule so once your time is up, you are asked to leave your table. I understand given that it's a business, but I wish there was a way to enjoy a pour or glass in the outdoor area. We will definitely come back! Hoping to visit around the holidays!
